D.J. Hall Retrospective
An eye for the art and artifice of Southern California

PALM SPRINGS
• Sunny scenes full of color comprise the works of D.J. Hall, but look again—beneath the surface, within the paintings of pretty people in pretty places, lies the unsettling reality of human mortality. Hall’s emotionally charged, realistic works are on view at the Palm Springs Art Museum in a 35-year retrospective that showcases the artist’s talent for capturing the reality behind illusion. Inspired by visits to Palm Springs resorts and Los Angeles-area beaches, Hall masterfully depicts beautiful, self-satisfied women who seem to pay little regard to the inevitable ravages of time. In turn, Hall hopes to inspire deeper reflection about our society’s desire for eternal youth and its preoccupation with self-image. The retrospective pairs Hall’s arresting and at times discomforting images with drawings, photographs, color studies, and notes used in the creative process of completing her paintings. The exhibition opens May 24 and runs through September 14. For more information: 760. 325.7186 or www.psmuseum.org.

Woodworks & More
SPOKANE
• A combination of sculpture and printmaking characterizes the work of Montana-based artist John Buck. His works are on display May 17-November 30 at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture. Buck carves wooden figures and printing blocks, and his choice of materials is reminiscent of tribal and folk arts. The exhibition also features shadow boxes and glass works by Buck. To illuminate the artist’s process, carved printing blocks, prints in varying stages of completion, carving and printmaking tools, and photographs of the artist at work are displayed in the presentation. Record-Breaking Los Angeles Art Show Brings out the Stars

Despite an unstable stock market, a housing slump, and rain-soaked streets, the Los Angeles Art Show attracted more than 25,000 visitors in January. About 125 top art dealers from across the country presented traditional as well as cutting-edge works. Among the celebrities spotted at the show were Patricia Heaton, Billy Crystal, Kevin Bacon, Dennis Hopper, Owen Wilson, and Steve Martin. Based on the success of the show, discussions are underway to expand the 2009 edition.

But while one show thinks about expanding, another announces its demise: Stuart Horodner and Laurel Gitlen, co-organizers of the annual Affair at the Jupiter Hotel in Portland, OR, have announced their decision to end the run of the popular four-year-old art fair. Californians Cynthia Britain, Zenaida Mott, Debra Huse, and eight other top women plein-air painters head to Yosemite National Park this month to capture the spectacular scenery. The fruits of their artistic labors will be on view at Knowlton Gallery in Lodi, CA, during October and November.
